Turning vegetation into value: Fonterra’s Carbon Removals Tool

Fonterra’s new Carbon Removals Tool recognises farmers for the positive impact their farm planting has in reducing emissions, supporting the Co-op’s climate goals and driving value in the global market.

Farmers now have the opportunity to contribute to more accurate emissions reporting through the new Carbon Removals Tool, accessible via the Co-operative Difference Dashboard. This innovative tool allows you to claim carbon removals from the vegetation on your farm, directly impacting your farm’s carbon footprint and contributing to the Co-op’s overall emissions reduction goals. We’ve worked with New Zealand company, Prism Earth to map vegetation and estimate carbon removals across each farm using satellite imagery plus farm data.

This is more than just an environmental responsibility, it represents a tangible way to enhance our collective sustainability efforts, strengthen the Co-op’s global competitive edge, and ultimately increase the value of your milk.

“It's about giving farmers the ability to see the positive impact of their planting work and get credit for it in their farm footprint."

“It’s a practical way to recognise the role vegetation plays in reducing emissions and to strengthen the sustainability story behind New Zealand milk,” she says.

By including carbon removals in your farm’s footprint, we can showcase our commitment to climate-conscious farming practices. The project also puts in place the foundations for the Co-op to promote the benefits that come from planting beyond just emissions, such as water quality, erosion control, biodiversity, and shade and shelter for stock.

Claiming your farm’s carbon removals is also a key part of the Co-operative Difference framework. It’s one of the seven actions that empower farmers to unlock Te Pūtake – the starting point of the Co-operative Difference Achievement – and rewarding farmers, while also reflecting Fonterra’s commitment to sustainable and responsible farming.

Doing the declaration is very simple and takes just a moment of your time. The work has already been done for you – review the vegetation mapped for your farm through the Co-operative Difference Dashboard, confirm the details, and claim the associated carbon removals.

The new tool builds on the actions farmers are already taking to reduce emissions by providing a clear, measurable way to showcase progress, while also strengthening the global market position of New Zealand milk.
