All raw milk must be filtered before it enters the vat to ensure that dairy companies consistently receive milk that is free from sediment.
The farm milk filter requirements are contained in the Ministry for Primary Industries’ (MPI) Code of Practice for the Design and Operation of Farm Dairies NZCP1.
Downgrade support
The herd size milked through your farm dairy determines the filter size you need for your operation. Filters are sized to an effective filtering area of 6.0 cm²/ cow and your filters will meet the MPI standard if they are within 95% (5.7 - 6.0 cm²/cow).
Organise a traceback
Your Farm Dairy Assessor will check your filter system during your annual Farm Dairy Assessment and will advise if it is the correct size for your dairy operation.
You will need to upgrade your filters if your current filters are:
- Below 50% of the sizing requirement
- Below 70% of the sizing requirement and have the capability to in-dairy feed.
