When Hamish Johnston, a farmer from Mayfield with 259 hectares milking 850 cows, discovered areas outside the pivots on his dairy farm needed irrigation management, he found securing a company to design the project challenging due to its complexity.
He turned to Farm Source for advice and, being familiar with the K-Line pod system, requested that RXP design the project. Initially focussing on irrigation, Hamish also required an effluent plan.
“We have used RXP before and know they have quality products. When I spoke to Jess Cudmore, Manager at Farm Source Methven about the different projects we had coming up on the farm, she recommended that RXP could design an irrigation and effluent system that would suit our needs,” says Hamish.
Hamish needed to fix the overall flow of water and plan for future demand. Considering potential changes in stock management, water usage, and effluent disposal, this forward-thinking approach ensures the system remains effective and adaptable over time.

Tony Atwool, RXP Technical Support Engineer says the biggest challenge was working around “the long skinny sections surrounding the pivots.”
“The area was relatively odd-shaped for effluent with traditionally dry land areas around them. There is a lot of education and explanation involved in a project like this, to ensure the farmer is always able to achieve what is best for their farm,” he says.
Tony and RXP Technical Design Engineer Hamish Carter drafted the initial design for Hamish. RXP proposed a range of long laterals and a mix of K-Line® lengths – allowing the final product to be easy to use for Hamish’s team. The proposal was approved, and Hamish wanted to start right away with K-Line, planning to address effluent later in the year.
