Collaboration between farmer, Farm Source Technical Sales Representatives and seed supplier representatives are essential for effective pasture renewal.

You know the old saying ‘two heads are better than one’? Well, when it comes to planning and executing your best-ever pasture renewal this autumn, three heads might be even better: farmer, local TSR and seed supplier representative.

Barenbrug’s Area Manager for Northland, Waikato, and King Country Julie Gaukrodger says it’s a proven formula.

“Farmers know what their farm needs in terms of new pasture. There’s no substitute for the TSR’s local knowledge; they know their clients, their region, and they’re on-farm enough to know how those individual businesses tick; and Barenbrug Area Managers have the specialist forage expertise to provide technical backup and solutions where required,” she says.

“Three-way collaboration like this has over the years helped countless farmers select, sow, grow and manage the right pastures to remain productive and successful. The partnership approach works for the on-going benefit of all involved.

Julie works closely with TSRs and farmers every season to help create autumn pasture renewal plans that consider everything from correct paddock selection to appropriate grazing management months down the track.

Her role is to back this up with a second set of eyes and ears, and the technical, farm system perspective that comes from specialising solely in pastures and forage across the upper North Island. Feedback from farmers to TSRs is crucial.

“A lot of farmers sowed our new perennial ryegrass Array last season, in conjunction with advice from their TSRs. When Array’s early season growth, and very high density surprised some of them, by growing more dry matter per ha than they first realised, they told their TSRs and the TSRs told us. That meant we were able to follow up straight away with technical tips and advice about how best to manage grazing it, and now, it’s going great for those farmers.”
