Updating your mobile device’s operating system

Step-by-step guides to get your technology working for you.

1. Connect to Wi-Fi

Ensure your device is connected to a stable Wi-Fi network to avoid data charges and interruptions.

2. Charge your device

Make sure your battery is at least 50% charged, or keep it plugged in during the update.

3. Back up your data (recommended)

Use Google Backup or another cloud service to back up your contacts, photos, and apps.

  • Go to Settings > System > Backup > Turn on “Back up to Google Drive”

4. Check for updates

  • Go to Settings > System > Software update or System updates
  • Tap Check for updates

5. Download and install

  • If an update is available, tap Download and install
  • Follow on-screen instructions. Your phone may restart several times.

6. Verify the update

After installation, go back to Settings > About phone to confirm the new version.


Troubleshooting tips

  • If no update appears, your device may already be up to date or not eligible for the latest version. Contact your mobile network provider for further support.
  • If your device is managed by your company, updates may be restricted - check with IT.

5. Download and install

  • If an update is available, tap Download and install
  • Enter your passcode if prompted.
  • Agree to the terms and conditions.
  • The update will begin downloading and installing. Your phone may restart.

6. Verify the update

  • After installation, go to Settings > General > About
  • Check the iOS version to confirm the update was successful.
